Snow Days

There’s nothing like a good snow day. We all probably have fond memories of being young and playing in the snow until our face was numb and our fingers wouldn’t move. Just about anyone can enjoy a snow day. You don’t need money or a special setup. As long as you’ve got snow and some time, fun can be had.

Yet somewhere along the way, as we get older, we tend to forget that. Snow days aren’t fun anymore. They become an inconvenience. Or at least that’s how we often react. It reminds me of the story in the not-nearly-as-good, Frosty sequel: Frosty Returns. You know, the one with John Goodman voicing Frosty. We let the simple joy of a snow day pass us by.

So, this winter I went in with a simple approach: embrace, and enjoy, the snow days. And as of this writing, we’re getting quite a few of them. What does that mean, embrace the snow days? Certainly, there are things that still need to be done and responsibilities to uphold. However, there are things just out of your control, and you shouldn’t stress too much over them. You get a ton of snow and ice? You’re likely not leaving your house for a day, at least. Don’t stress over it. Find something enjoyable to do while you’re there. Or if you’re dead set on being productive all the time, be productive at your house. I’m sure there is at least one thing you’ve been putting off that needs to be done there.

So far this winter, I’ve hunkered down in these snow days and watched Grumpy Old Men (my favorite snowed-in classic), organized my house a little, and, most important of all, had some fun with my family. We’ve built snowmen, had snowball fights, and gone sledding down steep hills. This winter has reminded me that even the simplest things, like a snow day, can bring us a lot of joy.
