Tornado confirmed in Pittsylvania County

(Callands) — The National Weather Service confirms a tornado touched down briefly in Pittsylvania County.  This happened Thursday night as a high pressure system moved through the region, bringing tornado watches through the region. 

    Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg say an EF-1 tornado landed in the Callands and Swansonsville communities at around 9-30 Thursday evening.  It stayed on the ground for six minutes, creating a mile-long and 250-yard foot wide swath of damage.  

    There was no significant property damage reported and no one was hurt…but dozens of trees were ripped down in the area of Strawberry Creek Lane near Franklin Turnpike. 

    The storm packed winds between 100 and 107 miles per hour. 

    There were trees down on both sides of Strawberry Creek Lane with several across the roadway. 

    Another tornado touched down earlier Friday in Elkin County-North Carolina near Wilkesboro.
