Federal improvements possible for local cemetery

(Danville) — Danville planners have a proposal to ease parking concerns at the local Veteran’s Cemetery.

They’re asking City Council to transfer ownership of two vacant lots along Lee Street to the Department of Veterans Affairs. That will help develop off-street parking to accommodate visitors to the cemetery.

The City owns both lots along directly across the street from the cemetery, from tax foreclosure suits stemming from the demolition of unsafe and blighted houses that were on the lots. The City is paying to have the grass on the lots regularly mowed.

Right now there is no off-street parking for the cemetery. On Memorial Day and other holidays, both sides of Lee Street fill up with parked cars.

Under this proposal, the city would vacate the lots as surplus property. The U.S. government would make improvements to the lots and assume future maintenance costs.
