Pitt. Co. explores regulations on data centers

(Chatham) — Pittsylvania County Planners are recommending a new set of rules governing data centers.

Right now, there are no data centers in Pittsylvania county and the County Code does not include regulations for data centers.

County staff drew up a set of guidelines to make sure data centers can be regulated to protect the health, safety, and welfare of citizens and the County.

The Planning Commission is recommending the Board of Supervisors adopt the new language. It would allow Data Centers be allowed by Special Use Permit only in the M-2 Heavy Industrial District.

It also includes a series of regulations that would pertain only to data centers.  There would be a 65-decibel noise threshold for data centers at their property lines. They would also have to be connected to a public water system if they use a water-based cooling system.

The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors will take up the proposal next month.
