(Chatham) — Pittsylvania County leaders are ready to throw the switch on the latest round of school improvements.
The Board of Supervisors has adopted a resolution authorizing the County School Board to apply for nearly 26-and-a-half million dollars in state Literary Loan funds. Those will be covered by revenues the county is getting from the 1% School Sales Tax that voters approved two years ago.
The interest rate on this loan is just 2%.
The projects include 12 classroom additions at Kentuck Elementary School and the replacement of the HVAC systems and windows at Southside and Union Hall elementary schools.
The county estimates about three-and-a-half million dollars each year from the sales tax boost. The County began receiving the funds in September. They can only be used for school capital infrastructure needs.
The first projects funded by the tax increase included Security vestibules at all ten elementary schools and the four middle schools, which will include tach-resistant film on all entranceway glass.
