DAHS offers reward in animal abuse probe

(Danville) — Danville Police say a rabbit stolen during a burglary was found dead in its cage—and the Humane Society wants to find out who did it.

On May 10, Danville Police were called to investigate a theft at a house on Paxton Street.  Several items were taken, including a rabbit in a white cage.  Humane Society Executive Director Paulette Dean says it was a few days later when someone found the cage in an open field near the home.  The rabbit was dead.

Dean says the animal had no way of escaping the cage, and notes that rabbits are very susceptible to heat.

Anyone with information on the theft can call the Humane Society at (434) 799-5306.  Callers may remain anonymous. If your information leads to an arrest and a conviction, you could be eligible for a reward of up to a thousand dollars. Rewards are paid through the Earl Merricks Stop the Cruelty Fund.
