Danville man pleads guilty to federal robbery charges

(Danville) — A second suspect being prosecuted by the feds for a Danville convenience store robbery has pleaded guilty.

36-year old Calvin Franklin Hughes was arrested two weeks after a February-2023 hold up at the Sunrise convenience store in the 500 block of Memorial Drive.

The clerk said two black males walked in. One had a gun and the other a machete. They demanded the clerk open the register. Both men left with 750 dollars in cash and cigarettes. While leaving, Hughes fired a shot into the ceiling. No one was hurt.

Days later, Danville Police served a search warrant at Hughes’ apartment where they found a gun hidden in an HVAC vent and a machete in a closet.  Ballistic tests confirmed the gun they found was the same one fired in the store.

Hughes this week pleaded guilty to with robbery in violation of the Hobbs Act, along with discharging a firearm in the commission of a felony.

19-year old Arshay Trevante Haley pleaded guilty earlier this year.  Both will be sentenced later.
