(Danville) — Downtown planners are accepting a proposal from a developer to modify a former tobacco warehouse they’re converting into apartments—but with conditions.
The owners of 553 Lynn Street are renovating the building to include 21 high end multi-family units (18 two-bedroom and 3 single-bedroom).
They asked the River District Design Commission for a Certificate of Appropriateness to replace the current windows to bring in more natural lighting. They proposed fixed picture windows on top of three slider windows with a bronze aluminum finish.
But the city’s Planning Division recommended denial of the Certificate, saying it does not meet design guidelines.
The Commission Thursday rejected the request, but they they conditionally approved it if developers altered the window pattern to include a grid pattern to simulate the current windows and to blend in better with the neighbors.
Commissionsers signed off on the developer’s plans to clean up the concrete entryway, painting it white.
The developers are expected to present an amended plan at a later date.
