2024 City Council, School Board slates nearly fixed

(Danville) — We’re still more than four months out from the election, but it sounds like the ballot will be crowded in this year’s Danville City Council race.

As of Monday, nine candidates have filed to run for the five seats that will be up for grabs in November.  That includes all of the incumbents: Barry Mayo, Lee Vogler, Sherman Saunders, Madison Whittle and Larry Campbell.

The other four hopefuls are women.  Currently there are no women on Danville City Council.  First-time candidates Shakeva Frazier and Felice McWilliams, along with second-time candidates Petrina Carter and Maureen Belko hope to change that.

Danville’s 2024 School Board election will also feature more candidates than available seats.

Three of the four incumbents whose seats are up for grabs are seeking re-election.  That includes board Vice-Chair Tyrell Payne, along with Charles McWilliams and Takessa Walker. Incumbent Phillip Campbell has not announced a re-election bid.

There are two newcomers on the ballot, including local business leader Kacey Cunningham and retired school teacher Corey Williams. That adds up to five candidates running for four seats.

The deadline for candidates to file for Danville School Board or City Council is Tuesday at 5pm.
