(Danville) — A major project at Danville Regional Airport got a big shot in the arm Tuesday.
The U.S. Economic Development Administration announced a $4.1 million grant to help build a new aviation training facility. The plans include a new 12,532-square-foot facility for aviation maintenance and flight instruction training. This will require a local match of $2.7 million.
The Danville Aviation Training Facility at Danville Regional Airport will include advanced education, research and training. The new hangar will be used by Danville Community College’s Aviation Maintenance Technology Program and Averett University’s Aeronautics Program.
Earlier this year, the state awarded the project a 100-thousand dollar grant. The new hanger should be completed in the summer of 2025.
Last year, the airport wrapped up a project to rehab aprons serving the south ramp, including the installation of rubberized concrete. They also unveiled a two million dollar renovation of the airport’s terminal. State aviation officials say Danville Regional Airport has a six million dollar annual economic impact in the region.
