Axton man allegedly shoots and kills son, daughter-in-law

(Axton, Va.) — A Pittsylvania County man allegedly shot and killed his son and daughter-in-law Tuesday night.

Sheriff’s Captain Gerald Ford says they got a 911 call at around 9:30pm Tuesday.  The caller said two people had been shot at a house on 471 River Ridge Road in Axton.

Deputies found a man and a woman unresponsive outside of the house, suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. They were later identified as 39-year-old Ashley Marie Roberts and 41-year-old William Jason Roberts. Both lived in Roanoke.

William Roberts’ father, 65-year old William Lester Roberts (pictured), was arrested at the scene. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and three weapons charges.  He’s being held without bond in the Pittsylvania County Jail.  Autopsies are scheduled on the two victims.

Captain Ford says this shooting was NOT connected to a triple-shooting in Axton last weekend. Three people were shot in that incident, one of them died.  A suspect is already in custody.
