(Blairs) — One person was badly hurt in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday on Route 29 north of Danville.
Chief Steven Barts with Blairs Fire and Rescue says it happened Tuesday afternoon at around five-thirty in the 7100 block of route 29, not north of the Danville Expressway and near the Blairs Fire and Rescue headquarters.
The first crews found a vehicle engulfed in flames, with a driver trapped inside. Volunteers quickly began dousing the blaze and trying to extricate the victim. The driver was removed from the burning car, treated at the scene, and later airlifted to the hospital with life threatening injuries.
Barts says the crash’s proximity to their headquarters allowed volunteers to arrive in three minutes. In just four minutes they began dousing the blaze. Barts says this might have had a different outcome if the crash occurred elsewhere.
Northbound and southbound lanes on 29 were closed for about an hour. Blairs got help from Mount Hermon and Ringgold Fire and Rescue, and Pittsylvania Public Safety. State Police are investigating the crash.
