Violence concerns shelve development project

(Danville) — Ongoing violence at a North Danville housing complex has forced a developer to ditch plans for a large assisting living community.

Earlier this week Showcase reported on a request from Joe Cubas to rezone a seven-and-a-half acre wooded lot off Piney Forest Road, near Nor-Dan Shopping Center, to build a 174-unit elderly and assisted living facility.

The land is just south of the Woodside Village apartment complex. In a social media post Thursday, Cubas said he was aware of a recent shooting death at Woodside, but he was unaware of the frequency of violent crime at the complex. There have been three shooting deaths at Woodside over the past two years, and several other violent crimes.

Cubas met with Danville Police and talked to neighbors to get more information. Cubas says he cannot go forward with a project that will put people at risk, “especially the elderly.”

Cubas has formally withdrawn his request for a rezoning.  He says he hopes to find another place in Danville where he can build this assisted living facility.

“On Monday, my engineers will begin working on transposing or modifying the conceptual site plans to another one of our properties,” Cubas said in a statement.
