“Soft Opening” for Doyle Thomas splash pad

(Danville) — Kids and kids at heart will get a sneak peek this week of the city’s newest water attraction.

Danville Parks and Recreation Monday will begin what they’re calling a “soft opening” of the new splash pad at Doyle Thomas Park. A formal ribbon cutting is set for Friday.

The soft opening will help with testing and training. It could mean intermittent shutdowns as crew observe equipment performance and fix any bugs.

The Doyle Thomas Park splash pad will operate under the same familiar hours as the recently-opened Third Avenue Park splash pad:  Monday-Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday-Sunday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Admission is free.

This is the city’s second splash pad.  Both can handle about thirty users at a time. The third will be larger, and part of the new Riverfront Park that’s being developed next to the White Mill.

A fourth, even larger, splash bad will be built at the southwestern corner of Ballou Park.  It will accommodate eighty users at a time.  Engineers don’t expect any nearby traffic delays during construction. That won’t be open for at least another year. It’s estimated price tag is around a million dollars.
