Judge sets recount date in 5th district GOP primary

(Goochland County, Va.) — A judge has set a date for a recount in this year’s Fifth District Republican Congressional Primary.

Congressman Bob Good filed a Petition asking for a recount in Goochland County Circuit Court. He wants a review of last month’s Republican Congressional primary.  The State Board of Elections certified first-term state Senator John McGuire the winner by a 374-vote margin out of more than 62,000 votes.

Goochland County Circuit Court Judge Claude Worrell Thursday set a recount date for July 31st. On that day all of the documents and ballots will be securely transported to a central counting location in Goochland by members of local sheriffs’ offices.

Because the margin was six-tenths of a percent, Good will have to pay for the recount.  The estimated cost is $100,000.  If the margin were less than a half-percent, the recount would have been publicly-funded.

Unless the recount changes the results, McGuire will take on Democratic nominee Gloria Tinsley Witt in the November election.
