(Fayetteville, N.C.) — A recent member of the Averett University Men’s basketball team died over the weekend in crash.
Jamael Carter was killed in a single-vehicle accident near Fayetteville. The North Carolina Highway Patrol says speed was a factor when Carter ran off of the road and hit a pair of trees.
Carter played high school basketball at Northwood Temple Academy in Fayetteville. He spent three years on the Averett basketball team, graduating earlier this year. He started three games last year before suffering a season-ending injury.
In the just-completed season, Carter had a season-high nine points against Greensboro and was named to the ODAC All-Academic Team. Carter was 22 years old.
