Council approves arcade proposal

(Danville) — City leaders have approved a developer’s plans for a family-friendly arcade in the southern end of Danville.

Brian Cosner and his father, Michael, will get a Special Use Permit for indoor commercial recreation to operate an arcade in Southwyck Plaza.  “Our plan was to open sometime this summer, but having to go through all of the legality, planning and getting other things ready; we still have a little bit of work to do,” Brian Cosner told Danville City Council. “We’re now looking at 5-to-6 weeks of work before opening.”

The arcade will be developed in three spaces in the shopping center that were formerly occupied by Furniture & More.

Councilman Lee Vogler says this will help make up for a deficit in family-centered activities in Danville.  “For a number of years now we’ve heard folks wanting more family activities and we as a city have done a good job lately with seasonal attractions like splash pads,” Vogler said.  “But to have something like this come around that’s year-round and indoors is special.”

Vice-Mayor Gary Miller says the move will also revitalize one of the city’s largest strip malls. “We need some more development in that shopping center. I’ve lived near it for thirty years and it has never been full,” Miller said.

City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the permit.
