Leaders mull power demands of proposed data center

(Danville) — Local leaders say getting enough power to a proposed Data Center in Pittsylvania County shouldn’t be a problem.  But exactly how they’ll do it is still being determined.

Danville Utility Director Jason Gray told the Danville Utility Commission this week the companies that generate power will have to figure it out. “We are working with our transmission provider, AEP. We are dependent upon their transmission system to deliver any kind of power resources that could serve a big customer like that,” Gray told the Commission.

The 58 East Data Campus will be built on over 900 acres on the south side of Route 58, just east of the Danville city limits. It’s a $4-to-5 billion investment that will create up to 500 jobs.

Gray says AEP will have to come up with the most cost effective way to power the large center. “There are several different lines that come into the city.  One is from North Carolina.  Another is out of Roanoke,” Gray said.  “AEP will have to determine what kind of upgrades will be needed to serve such a large customer.”

Builders say the data center will generate between 120-and-200 million dollars a year in direct tax revenue for Pittsylvania County.

Developers have gotten a rezoning from the county, but will still need a Special Use Permit from the Pittsylvania County Board of Zoning Appeals before any construction can begin.
