(Danville) — Danville City Council has approved a developer’s plans to turn another former tobacco district warehouse into housing.
A company called 400 Bridge, LLC is getting a Special Use Permit to waive density restrictions at 400 Bridge Street.
Developer Adam Vaught says it’s a three-story brick structure with zero setbacks from the property line at the corner of Bridge and Wilson Streets, across from the former Worsham Street Bridge site. “We’re planning for 25 units with a mixture of one and two-bedrooms,” Vaught told City Council. “We hope to be done by early summer next year.”
The zoning code currently restricts development in the Tobacco Warehouse Commercial zoning district to 24 units per net acre for multifamily residential. Developers want to create a multifamily complex with 25 one and two-bedroom apartment units. This exceeds the maximum density allowed, so they’ll need a waiver.
Vice-Mayor Doctor Gary Miller supported the idea. “This will really chip away at our housing shortage, the more units we can get the better,” Miller said.
Council approved the permit on a unanimous vote.
