(Danville) — A local football legend was found dead in a Danville hotel room this weekend.
Family members confirm Bryan “Keeta” Covington was found dead at the Astoria Hotel on Piney Forest Road. Danville Police say they were called to the hotel Sunday for a report of a deceased male. They did not released the name of the person they found.
Danville Police spokesman Matt Bell says they initially investigated the call as an “unattended death.” A preliminary probe showed no signs of bodily trauma.
Covington was an all-state running back for the 1982 G.W. Eagles state championship team that went undefeated. He went on to play college football with his older brother, Al, and G.W. teammate Ferrell Edmunds at the University of Maryland.
At College Park, Covington was a starting defensive back for the Terps and one of the best kick returners in school history. During his career, Covington had the third most kick return yards in school history. He was number-one when he left the program in 1986—and number seven in career punt return yards. He also ranks tied for 13th all-time in interceptions at Maryland and was a two time All-ACC selection.
