Averett enrollment inches upward

(Danville) — Danville’s hometown university is getting bigger. Averett Tuesday announced a nearly 7% increase in enrollment this fall as compared to last year.

The nearly 1,450 students at Averett includes students from 30 states and 29 countries, ranging in age from 15 to 77, studying in person and online.

“We are proud that our numbers have remained strong and grown steadily,” said Dr. S. Lee Beaumont, Averett’s Vice President of enrollment management and university marketing. “Every corner of our institution plays a part in this, and the strategic enrollment and retention efforts we’ve employed across the University have paid off.”

About 900 are traditional students attending classes on the University’s five campuses. Almost 500 live on Averett’s Main Campus—another 400 live off campus and commute. A little more than half of the traditional students are student-athletes on Averett’s 22 NCAA Division III teams.

The number of students transferring from other schools is up by 20. Averett Online is also growing, with more than 550 students in nearly a dozen undergraduate and graduate programs.  Psychology and business are still the most popular majors.

Also, Averett’s School of Nursing’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has its highest enrollment ever, with a record 46 new students this fall, adding up to 116 enrollees.

Business is still the largest major for traditional students. Averett’s growing Aeronautics program is second with its largest-ever entering class.
