Permit approved for former YWCA

(Danville) — The group that’s renovated the former YWCA on Main Street will get to expand their on-site restaurant.

The former Y is now a mixed-use commercial space. It has personal service establishments and professional offices. Tremell Jefferies says they’ve opened a restaurant in one of the suites. The Permit will allow them to expand it to include event space for parties, workshops, banquets, lectures and more.

“We’re looking to have a really unique space that really distinguishes us from the many other dining options,” Jefferies said.

Danville’s Zoning Code classifies that as indoor commercial recreation, prompting the need for a permit. Now with the permit in hand, Jefferies says it won’t be too long before they’re ready.  “We’re painting right now and getting things on the wall,” Jefferies said. “Right now we’re looking at a November opening.”

And Jefferies says they want the unique uses provided at the old YWCA to become part of the River District Renaissance in Danville.  “We will be part of the ‘I Am Tourism’ ambassador program with the tourism department. We want to be a visitation location that will let people know about the events, the arts and the culture of Danville.”

City Council voted unanimously to approve the permit earlier this week.
