Man sentenced in fatal Danville crash

(Danville) — A man charged in a fatal crash last December in Danville will serve seven years in prison.

27-year old Caleb Lane Durham of Blanch, North Carolina was charged with aggravated vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. It happened December 20th in the 1900 block of Goodyear Boulevard.

Investigators say Durham’s car ran into a vehicle driven by 52-year old Michael Anthony Carter of Reidsville, North Carolina. The impact caused Carter’s vehicle to leave the road. Both drivers were taken from the scene by the Life Saving Crew.

Carter later died from his injuries. Durham was treated and released. Police say neither was wearing a seat belt.

Earlier this year, a Danville Circuit Court Judge accepted a plea deal where Durham pleads guilty to both counts, but prison time would be capped at seven years.  He was sentenced Monday.

A judge handed down 20 years, but suspended 13, resulting in a seven year term.  Durham will also have two years probation upon release, and must have 13 years good behavior.
