Incumbents fend off challengers in Danville City Council race

(Danville) — There will be no changes on Danville City Council. City voters Tuesday returned all five incumbents who were running for re-election, leaving four newcomers out of the running.

The top vote-getter Tuesday was incumbent Lee Vogler with nearly nine-thousand votes.  He first joined City Council in 2012 as the youngest person ever elected to the panel.  And he’s still the youngest member.

Second place went to Madison Whittle.  He raised more money than any of the other candidates, and parlayed that into a third term on Council.

Also returning to Council is Larry Campbell who got just over eight-thousand votes.  Campbell was first elected to City Council in May 2008 and has served as Co-Assistant Pastor at Bible Way Cathedral Church since 1994.

The last two spots went to the other incumbents.  Barry Mayo will serve his second term on City Council. Sherman Saunders, Council’s longest-serving current member, finished fifth.  Saunders served on Council from 1996-2000, then lost in his bid for a second term.  He was appointed to Council in 2001 to fill an unexpired term, and has been re-elected every four years since. Saunders served as Mayor from 2008-2016.

Finishing just out of the running was newcomer Shakeva Frazier. She got over 66-hundred votes, but finished more than 800 votes shy of being elected.

Petrina Carter and Maureen Belko finished out of the running in their second bid for City Council.

Felice McWilliams finished ninth.  It was her first run for public office.

Danville Registrar Peggy Petty reports election day turnout in Danville was just under 30-percent.  That was the same amount of voters as the nine-thousand who voted early either in person or by mail.  That adds up to a 60% voter turnout in the city.
