(Danville) — Local developers are thinking small for Danville’s next revitalization projects.
The state Department of Housing and Community Development’s Virginia Main Street program has awarded the River District Association a Small Area Plan grant. Covering North Union Street, and the North Main Hill.
In earlier statements, the RDA envisioned starting with small projects like green space enhancements; wayfinding and facade improvements. Later efforts could include a transportation, mobility, and pedestrian safety plans.
RDA Executive Director Diana Schwartz says they’ll get the ball rolling—then step aside. “We’re not in charge of this effort, this is more of a community effort,” Schwartz explained. “But we definitely see ourselves as a supporter and convener of this work.”
Long-term suggestions could include designating the areas as an Historic District—developing a zoning overlay district—and developing more green space.
These development efforts would be separate from larger efforts targeting Danville’s River District.
