What makes Kenny Lewis Sr. community strong?
“Kenny is a local leader with a long history of giving his time and leadership ability through the Danville Public Schools and the Church Based Tutorial Program. He has the ability to create partnerships and bring people together – what our community needs. He always carries himself with grace and professionalism.
I chose Kenny to be a 2017 Community Strong Person of the Year for his work with the CBT non-profit he founded and for volunteering time on local boards.”
-Lauren Mathena, 2016 Showcase Magazine Community Strong Person of the Year
Why is community involvement so important to you?
The main reason is because, to this very day, I get a warm feeling inside when I think back over how my family and community have supported me through my career. From cradle to career!
What inspires you to volunteer?
I believe it’s a desire God placed in me because it brings me joy to see individuals succeed, especially those who need us the most.
How do you balance life, work, and community involvement?
We prioritize by putting God first, family, and then community. Trust me, it’s easier said than done. It’s somewhat easier now that I’m retired.
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
What you make happen for someone else, God will make happen for you. – My Pastor Bill Motley
Who are your real-life heroes and why?
The one that stands out the most is my oldest brother. When both of my parents passed, my brother dropped his career and come home to raise me and the rest of our family. He made sure we earned our education.
What makes Danville so special to you?
It’s my home. Danville is the place that gave me my opportunity to display my gifts and talents.
How do you recharge? What do you like to do outside of work and volunteerism?
My faith and relationship with God is a major part of my life. I love reading the Word. Prayer, praise, and worship recharge me each day. Our church, Abundant Life, helps meet those needs. Also, I love spending time with my family and enjoying their successes.
What is your idea of happiness?
Happiness to me is being content with knowing who I am in Christ.
Do you have a favorite quote, and if so what is it?
Death and life are in the power of your tongue. – Proverbs 18:21
What are your favorite things to do in Danville?
My wife and I love to go to the Danville Mall to eat with our grandkids, to walk around the mall. During Christmastime, we love to ride around and looks at the lights. We enjoy going to the movies and eating at various restaurants. We try to see how healthy we can eat while still enjoying the food.
What are your visions for the future of Danville?
I envision Danville have a world-class educational system where every child has a pathway to a successful career, athletic programs that are second-to-none in the state with state-of-the-art facilities in all sports. I also envision we live up to the name as being a true “city of churches” what are united.
What are you most looking forward to in 2018?
Being debt free.
