(Danville) — Danville School leaders have signed off on next year’s budget. The nearly 102 million dollar spending plan is almost six-and-a-half million dollars more than the current one.
“It includes $64.4 million from the Commonwealth of Virginia, $27.8 million from the city of Danville, $8.6 million in federal grant revanue and other revenue of more than a million dollars,” said Finance Director Dr. Andrea Gillus.
Gillis told the Danville School Board Thursday the package includes money for positions that have been funded with federal money. That funding will run out this fall. “This will maintain our security staff at elementary schools and our bus aides,” Gillus said. “We’re also expecting more participation in our early college dual enrollment program with DCC.”
The budget continues all current school initiatives. They’ll also be able to put in a three-percent teacher’s pay raise, thanks to the state budget that should be finalized next week. “This will not impact our budget request to Danville City Council,” Gillus added.
The original budget called for a two-percent teacher’s pay raise, along with a one-time one-percent bonus. That was changed to reflect the state budget that will be voted on at next week’s Veto Session of the Virginia General Assembly.
The budget seeks a two-and-a-half million dollar increase in funding from the city of Danville. City Council is expected to adopt their budget in June.
