(Danville) — Danville leaders have signed off on a plan to ease parking concerns at the local Veteran’s Cemetery.
City Council voted this week to transfer ownership of two vacant lots on Lee Street to the Department of Veterans Affairs. They will develop off-street parking to accommodate visitors to the Danville National Cemetery.
The City owns both lots along directly across the street from the cemetery from tax foreclosure suits stemming from the demolition of unsafe and blighted houses that once occupied the lots. The City has paid to have the grass on the lots mowed.
With no off-street parking for the cemetery, both sides of Lee Street fill up with parked cars during big events like Memorial Day or Flag Day.
The U.S. government will make improvements to the lots and assume all future maintenance costs.
