(New York City) — Donald Trump is diving head-first into the local Congressional race.
The former President and presumptive GOP Presidential nominee released a video message Tuesday afternoon, urging voters in the Fifth District to support the challenge in this month’s primary. First-term State Senator John McGuire is challenging two-term incumbent Bob Good for the Republican nod.
Trump announced his endorsement of McGuire last week, and backed it up in Tuesday’s statement. “John McGuire is an American hero who served as a Navy Seal. John is a highly-respected state legislator who is strong on the border.”
Trump also had sharp words for Good, who originally backed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the Presidential race. “Bob Good is actually bad for Virginia. He will stab you in the back like he did me.”
Over the weekend, Trump’s attorneys sent Good’s campaign a cease-and-desist letter, demanding they remove signs that feature Trump’s name atop Good’s. Trump’s lawyers say the signs are misleading, that they suggest Trump has endorsed Good.
There’s been no reaction from the Good campaign. Three weeks ago, Good attended Trump’s trial in New York to show his support for the former President. Good chairs the House Freedom Caucus, and was seen as a driving force in this year’s move to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
The primary is set for June 18th. Early voting is already underway.
