(Danville) — One of the River District’s oldest and iconic signs could be getting a makeover.
The owners of the River District Towers, the former Dan River Research and Development building, wants to replace the existing signs on the west and south side of the building on Bridge Street.
The new signs will be roughly the same size as the old ones, but with a more modern font.
River District design guidelines require commercial signs to be mounted flat to the building or painted on, and they are limited in size to 32 square feet.
The four-story, 100,000-square-foot building’s current occupants include Spectrum Medical Center, Danville Regional Medical Center and the Cotton at Riverside Mill restaurant.
The first floor of the building features a small museum that tells the history of Dan River Mills. The Department of Historic Resources assisted in the redevelopment, which was one of the first major projects in Danville’s River District. The estimated cost of the makeover was over $25 million.
Planners are recommending the River District Design Commission approve the request for the new signs. The Commission will take up the issue next week.
