(Danville) — Local economic developers are ready to dot I’s and cross T’s on a plan to widen a road serving the Berry Hill Megapark.
The Danville-Pittsylvania County Regional Industrial Facility Authority will vote this week on easements and the moving of signs to allow crews to widen state Route 311. The state will pay RIFA more than $60,000 to remove a sign at the Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill to help with the project.
Berry Hill Road was re-designated ten years ago as State Route 311, making it eligible for money from Virginia’s Primary Road system.
Crews will widen 2.3 miles of Berry Hill Road from a two-lane undivided highway to a four-lane divided road from the intersection of the new connector road that’s under construction, southward to Oak Hill Road.
This will accommodate extra traffic that will be generated once the Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill lands a major client. Area economic developers say the connector road will improve mobility, and safety on Route 58 and will reduce travel times for employees and vendors who will need access to the Megasite.
RIFA is asking the state to name the northern portion of the road to honor former Authority Chairmen, Coy Harville and Danville City Councilman and former Mayor Sherman Saunders.
