(Pittsylvania County) — Summer officially ended first thing Monday morning for nearly 8,000 students in Pittsylvania County Schools.
They were originally scheduled to begin their 24-25 school year last Thursday, but heavy rains and floods from Tropical Storm Debby pushed the opening back to Monday.
Danville Schools opened last Wednesday, then got hit by the weather.
In Pittsylvania County, the return of school means 175 buses and A LOT more drivers—including student drivers and high schoolers who just recently got their licenses) will be on the road. Deputies are reminding motorists NOT to exceed the speed limit in a school zone. Speeding in a school zone is punishable with a fine of up to $2,500, up to 12 months in jail, and a 6-month suspension of your driver’s license.
There will be an increase in traffic on the roads as students, teachers, and support staff make their way to the 22 schools across Pittsylvania County.
