(Danville) — Danville Police have filed charges in a Thursday afternoon shooting which included a car crash involving a police cruiser.
It happened in the 200 block of North Main Street at around quarter after five. Police say a fight broke out and shots were fired. Police say a vehicle was hit but no people were hurt. Police say the people involved in the altercation all knew one another and there is no public threat.
Police were told that the suspected gunman, 25-year old Marvin James Saunders (pictured), had left the scene. Around that time, two officers in separate police vehicles spotted Saunders in the southbound lane of North Main driving a white Dodge pickup truck.
While accelerating to catch up to the suspect, and with emergency lights activated, one of the officers crashed at the intersection of North Main and West Thomas Street. The driver and passenger in the other involved vehicle were taken from the scene with non-life threatening injuries. The officer was not hurt. The crash remains under investigation.
Shortly after the crash, police pulled Saunders over and arrested him. They reportedly found a handgun on him.
Saunders is being held in the Danville City Jail under no bond. He’s charged with attempted malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, discharging a firearm in a public place, reckless handling of a firearm, and brandishing a firearm.
The shooting remains under investigation.
