(Danville) — City leaders are ready for the next step in making Danville an arts and cultural destination.
The Danville Department of Parks and Recreation has released a Cultural Arts Master Plan. It looks at Danville’s existing arts and culture, identifies resources, and determines what’s needed to enhance those resources.
Phase one included Preplanning and Discovery with a Steering Committee and stakeholder interviews. 35 local leaders were interviewed about their vision for a Cultural Arts Program in Danville.
Members of the public shared their ideas for arts and culture and consideration of public art types and locations. The public also got a chance to contribute directly to a survey. It had 181 responses.
Participants said the overall quality of arts and culture in Danville was average, but, “There’s a hunger for more—specifically, live music and theater and community arts events and festivals and iconic public art,” according to the report.
It also envisions a city Cultural District along Main and Craghead Street. The study recommends the creation of a Cultural Arts division within Parks and Rec, and the formation of a Cultural Arts Commission.
City leaders say the survey will give Danville a roadmap for how to, “Capitalize on a growing tourism market to draw artists to the region while supporting creatives and cultural organizers at the local level.”
