(Danville) — A long-time local business and political leader passed away on Sunday.
T. David Luther began his radio career as a disk jockey at the tender age of 13. While still a teen he began working full time with Piedmont Broadcasting at WBTM in the 1950s.
Over the next three decades he worked as an announcer, salesman, manager, and eventually station manager…a role he held until 1998.
In 2000, Luther turned his attention to local politics. He was elected to Danville City Council in 2000, and served three terms. His final two years he served as the city’s Vice-Mayor.
Professionally, Luther in 1998 became the third-ever Executive Director at International Broadcasters Ideabank, representing more than 450 radio stations. He retired several years ago and had served in an emeritus role since then.
In 1993, Luther was given the Gallimore Award from the Virginia Associated Press. In 2017 the Virginia General Assembly honored him with a resolution marking his 60-year broadcast career.
David Luther was 82 years old.
