(Danville) — Danville leaders are being asked to sign off on a road improvement project located mostly in Pittsylvania County.
The county has applied for Smart Scale funding for design and construction of a traffic signal at Orphanage Road and Franklin Turnpike at the city limits. The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking Danville City Council approve a resolution endorsing the application.
Although the project will mostly be in the County, a portion will be in the City. The state has given preliminary approval for funding.
The work would also include pedestrian crosswalks and turn lanes at the intersection. A 2021 study showed average daily traffic on Franklin Turnpike at the city limits was 16-thousand vehicles.
City Council will vote on the resolution later this week.
The Orphanage Road/Franklin Turnpike project is part of a larger effort to boost safety on a three-mile stretch of Route 41 from the city limits to Twin Springs Elementary School.
