(Boston, MA) — The Danville Police Department was honored this week at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference in Boston.
They got the Excellence in Criminal Investigations Award. This recognizes innovation in managing and conducting criminal probes.
The Department’s Special Investigations Section evolved rapidly the past seven years to address a gang problem that gave Danville the highest per capita homicide rate in Virginia in 2017.
When fatal and nonfatal overdoses began trending up in 2021, Danville Police used a multifront effort including aggressive investigation and prosecution of drug traffickers, data-driven crime deterrence and interdiction, and resources to help substance abuse victims. Last year, there was a downward trend in overdoses.
This is the first IACP award for the Department.
