(Chatham) — An energy firm is asking the feds for a permit to add on to a gas pipeline that terminates in Pittsylvania County.
The Williams Company has submitted an application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for what they are calling the Transco Pipeline Expansion. It was formerly referred to as the “Southeast Supply Enhancement Project.”
Williams wants to add 26 miles of 42-inch-diameter pipeline next to the existing Transco corridor in Pittsylvania County. This would be part of a larger upgrade to their system to increase capacity.
Williams also wants to add a pair of 22,500 horsepower compressors at the TransCo Compressor station near Chatham. This would link with the Mountain Valley Pipeline and head south to Alabama.
The expanded pipeline capacity would include an extra 1,500 dekatherms per day for Danville Utilities.
According to the application, Williams would begin construction in fall of 2026 and begin service by the end of 2027.
The application comes as federal regulators weigh a separate proposal for the Southgate Extension of the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
