(Danville) — City planners say a school system proposal for newer, bigger signs outside of schools would be a bad fit.
Danville Public Schools has filed for a Special Use Permit at thirteen locations for a waiver of maximum size for signage. All thirteen locations are zoned Transitional Office Commercial.
According to the Danville Zoning Code, ground signage in that district is restricted to 24 square feet of sign area, 32 square feet of architectural elements with a maximum height of ten feet. The school system is requesting a waiver to allow signs with 143 total square feet and 11-feet-nine-inches in height.
Planning Director Renee Burton tells the Planning Commission in a memo that needs to be reduced. She cites a recent example where the Commission had Sacred Heart School make changes to a proposed new sign outside of their school on Central Boulevard.
The Planning Commission will take up the issue next week. Staff is recommending they give the schools more time to come up with a new sign design.
