(Danville) — City leaders have begun the process of moving two departments to the former White Mill.
Danville City Council Tuesday approved a first reading on a plan to renovate nearly 86-hundred square feet on the second floor to house the city’s Office of Economic Development. They’ll also renovate over 12-thousand square feet on the first floor, turning it into the new home for Danville Parks and Recreation.
A space needs study conducted several years ago cited much-needed upgrades for these two departments.
Staffers say moving team members, allow for better oversight and accountability, and enhance the workplace quality. All that will help with employee recruitment and retention.
For Parks and Rec, the city envisions a one-stop shop for residents and visitors doing business with the department. It will also be next to the new Riverfront Park, the Riverwalk Trail, and the proposed Whitewater channel.
For Economic Development, the office will offer a good first impression for people interested in expanding businesses or opening new ones in the city.
The project qualifies for the Historic Tax Credit program, which should cover about 30% of the cost. This means a final net cost of about $3.6 million.
The Danville Industrial Development Authority is working with the Alexander Company to revamp the Old Number Eight Mill. The IDA owns most of the first floor and a portion of the second. Alexander has begun advertising available rental properties at Dan River Falls.
