(Danville) — A long road has ended for Danville planners. A special committee worked nearly two years in an effort called “PLAN Danville.”
Danville City Council unanimously approved a final report from the PLAN Danville Commission Tuesday. Planning Director Renee Burton says they talked to 13-thousand people during the two-year long drafting process. “The comprehensive plan has been up on PLAN-Danville-dot-org since October 15th,” Burton told Council. “We’ve been working very hard the past two years to gather community input and we’re really pleased with the results.”
Danville City Manager Ken Larking says the plan includes eight broad categories to map out development in Danville for the next 20 years. “One of the big reasons we got the All-American City award this year was the PLAN Danville effort and the community engagement that occurred as part of that process,” Larking said. “A lot of time and effort was spent making sure that every part of the community had a chance to engage in this process.”
PLAN-Danville is a 20-year document that public officials review every five years. The City of Danville is at the beginning of a new review cycle.
The final report focuses on three core values. Equity—Health—and resilience, then breaks them down into eight categories…called “big ideas.”
There are hundreds of recommendations in the report. One recurring theme was recognizing the importance of Danville’s unique neighborhoods.
Burton says the plan also focuses on the future of public recreation in Danville. Another area of emphasis at the neighborhood level was the development of so-called “Community Resource Hubs.”
