(Washington) — A local Congressman was one of a handful of Republicans who scuttled spending bill Thursday. It was a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded through March.
Fifth District Congressman Bob Good was one of 38 Republican no votes Thursday evening. They, and all but two Democrats, opposed the bill. “I voted against a terrible spending bill which would have borrowed $115 billion,” Good said immediately after the vote. “At some point the debt has got to matter, and Republicans have to do more than just campaign talking points.”
The bill was endorsed by President-elect Donald Trump. It was offered as a compromise to a much larger bill that included a 40-percent Congressional pay raise and exempted members of Congress from Obamacare.
Good objected to one provision of the bill that would have extended the debt ceiling another two years. “All that and no structural or fiscal reforms,” Good added. “This is not why the American people gave us a majority and this bill should have been defeated.
Good is leaving Congress at the end of the year. Trump endorsed John McGuire, who beat Good in the Republican primary and won the general election in November.
