When David and Diane Miller first encountered Motley’s Mill in 2016, opening an event venue wasn’t on their minds. With building contractor experience, the Millers were simply captivated by the property’s natural beauty—particularly the cascading waterfall that would become the heart of the transformation.
“We began not with a plan to open a venue,” Diane said, “but by a desire to share the captivating beauty of the waterfall with others.” What started as an appreciation for the site’s historic charm evolved into something much more significant.
The property’s roots run deep into local history. Dating back to the late 18th century, the site was once home to the largest mill dam in the county. In 1904, the Banister Milling Company constructed a roller mill that became the economic cornerstone of a small settlement named after Thomas Fitzgerald Motley Sr., who purchased the property in 1907. The mill’s industrial operations ended in 1955 after over half a century. It sat silent until 2016.
The Millers saw potential where others might have seen only an abandoned industrial site. Drawing on their construction expertise, the Millers transformed the historic location into a venue that honors its past while serving modern celebrations. “We feel we’ve brought this historic site full circle,” Diane said, “reimagining it as a gathering place, much like it once was during its milling heyday.”
The renaissance is a meticulously crafted destination that blends natural beauty with sophisticated amenities. The Villa offers two separate entrances and multiple bedrooms, while the Chalet can accommodate up to 200 guests. Outdoor spaces include a saltwater infinity pool, a courtyard with a wood-burning fireplace, and a concrete stage built over the old mill’s stone ruins.
What truly sets Motley’s Mill apart, according to Diane, is its “unparalleled atmosphere.” The natural beauty and the serene sound of cascading water create an enchanting backdrop that transforms every event into an unforgettable experience.
This commitment to creating memorable moments recently earned Motley’s Mill a RAVE Award for Favorite Event Location from the readers of Showcase Magazine. “It feels truly rewarding to be recognized by such a reputable publication and by our community,” Diane said.
The Millers’ approach to service is deeply personal. “We customize packages to meet each client’s unique needs and preferences,” Diane added. This means proactive planning, clear communication, and a willingness to address any challenges that arise. “We turn challenges into opportunities to exceed expectations,” Diane continued.
The team’s motivation comes from a shared vision of creating extraordinary experiences. By fostering a positive work environment and empowering individuals to take ownership of their roles, the Millers have built more than just a venue—they have created a destination that tells a story.
For the Millers, the magic of Motley’s Mill is about more than beautiful spaces. “Creating unforgettable experiences is about more than just providing a venue,” Diane said. “It’s about creating moments that leave a lasting impression.”
As the Banister River continues to flow past the historic dam, Motley’s Mill stands as a testament to vision, preservation, and the power of reimagining a space. What was once an industrial site is now a place where memories are made, celebrations come to life, and history continues to be written.
