(Danville) — State officials have nominated a historic former hospital building in Danville for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Department of Historic Resources also wants to place the former Winslow Hospital on Betts Street in the Virginia Landmarks Register.
Last year the Danville Redevelopment & Housing Authority purchased the building. It was the hospital used by African-Americans during segregation. The Winslow Hospital was built in 1940 and closed in 1971 when medical services in Danville were fully integrated at the former Danville Memorial Hospital.
Right now there are no immediate plans for the building, but the purchase comes amid a larger effort to preserve the history of the Almagro community.
The state has started a 60-day review period before they formally make the requests.
