(Danville) — For the second year in a row, Danville City Council is weighing a pay raise.
Earlier this year, the General Assembly passed a law increasing the maximum-allowed pay for Councils.
Right now, the mayor’s annual salary is $12,000 and council members’ is $10,000. Last year, Council approved a plan to boost the Mayor’s pay to 20k, and 18-thousand for the rest of Council. That doesn’t kick in until July of next year. State law requires an election before any pay increases can take effect. There is a Council election this fall.
Under a new proposal unveiled earlier this week, the mayor’s compensation would more than triple to $37,000 per year and council members would also more than triple to $34,000 annually.
Council discussed the idea in a work session this week and plan to have it on the agenda for their first meeting in July.
Danville City Council has not had a pay raise since 2014.
