Southside in “moderate drought”
(Danville) — Most of Virginia is now officially in a drought, including all of Southside Virginia.
The latest U.S. Drought monitor shows the impact of a month where our area has received very little recorded rainfall. According to the National Weather Service’s Blackburg office, Danville has had around a half-inch of rain for the month. Lynchburg got practically NO rain in June.
On the Drought Monitor, Danville, Pittsylvania County and about 90% of the rest of the state is listed in the D-1 category, classified as a “moderate drought.” There is a small swath listed as D-2 for a “severe drought.” That includes a small portion of the extreme north of Pittsylvania County.
Only the far southwestern tip of Virginia is not listed as being in a drought.
