(Danville) — Scattered rainfall has eased local drought conditions, but some parts of the state remain in the danger zone.
The latest US Drought Monitor shows Danville and Pittsylvania County are now out of the drought zone, with the city and county now in the “abnormally dry” category. Two weeks ago more than two-thirds of the county was listed as D-2 for severe drought. Last week it was downgraded to a D-1 for “moderate drought.”
The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors submitted a draft declaration request to the state. A declaration would make local farmers eligible for low-interest loans to recover drought-related crop losses.
Several counties in the upper Shenandoah Valley of Virginia are still listed as D-3 for an extreme drought.
