(Danville) — The local food pantry is getting a big help from a regional grocery store giant.
God’s Storehouse has received a three-thousand dollar grant from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed the hungry. The grant targets access to nutritious food and to eliminate health risks for those experiencing food insecurity.
God’s Storehouse Executive Director Karen Harris says they’re experiencing their usual summertime drop in donations, but demand is steadily increasing. She says reductions in SNAP benefits, the increase in food costs, and the increase in customers forces them to buy food to keep up with the demand.
“We are so fortunate to have received this grant from the Food Lions Feeds Charitable Foundation and so blessed by the ongoing partnership with the six local Food Lion Grocery Stores,” Harris said. “These funds will help ensure we can continue to stock our shelves.”
The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across its 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $18.9 million in grants.
Currently, God’s Storehouse serves more than 170 customers each day. Harris says right now they’re in particular need of donations of cereal and peanut butter.
