(Danville) — Danville leaders are floating a plan to get more single-family housing built in the city.
A recent study showed Danville’s housing shortage is most severe at the middle to upper middle income levels. Traditionally, these are people starting careers and families.
The city recently launched a program to incentivize builders to create multi-family housing. Next week, City Council votes on a proposal to set up a similar effort for single-family housing.
“These funds will be used to encourage developers to invest in new single family housing projects that increase supply and offer additional affordable options for individuals and families at all income levels,” according to a city memo.
The effort would connect with outside agencies and the private sector to create safe, affordable, and energy efficient housing for all income levels. It would be similar to efforts in the River District that use public resources to attract and leverage private development.
“Improving housing options will make Danville a more attractive option for higher-wage job employers looking to locate new facilities in our region. These new businesses will provide more opportunity for people living in Danville, raising their quality of life, and improving their economic outcomes,” the memo continues.
