McGuire leads in fundraising; Witt closing gap
(Richmond) — New numbers show a vast fund-raising difference in the Fifth District Congressional race, but they also show the challenger finishing strongly.
Third quarter numbers from the Federal Election Commission show Republican nominee John McGuire taking in more than one-point-six million dollars in contributions this election cycle. That’s six times more than his Democratic opponent, Gloria Witt.
But the report also shows Witt actually out-raised McGuire in the third quarter, 218-thousand dollars to 198-thousand. It also shows Witt has a slight advantage in cash on hand for the final month of the campaign.
“We’re incredibly proud of every dollar raised, because each one reflects the hard work and dedication of nearly 2,000 supporters across this district,” said Witt campaign spokesperson Joshua Norris. “Their belief in this campaign has fueled over 150 events in every corner of the 5th, and it’s allowed us to build a robust media presence, buy thousands of signs, print tens of thousands of literature pieces, and pay a small but incredibly talented professional staff.”
McGuire unseated incumbent Bob Good in the GOP primary by a close margin this summer. Good has served two terms in Congress.
